Together with our local partners in Malawi, we provide child protection services, mental health support, foster care, parenting support, and opportunities for families to improve their economic stability. By addressing the challenges that place children at risk, we help families stay together whenever it is safe to do so and build stronger communities where children can thrive.
THE LOCAL PICTURE IN MALAWI
Children are most likely to reach their full potential in a safe and nurturing family.
However, when caregivers face sustained social, economic, or physical hardship, they may place their children in orphanages as a perceived act of protection. Therefore, interventions are necessary that both respond to children already separated from their families (for example, through reintegration, foster care, and adoption) as well as prevent separation in the first place.
Malawi is home to an estimated 1.8 million vulnerable children. This number includes approximately 1 million who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS.
Kinship Care in Malawi: The vast majority of children without parental care in Malawi are absorbed into informal kinship care arrangements, but many of these extended families are already under significant strain due to chronic poverty and limited access to services.
Child marriage and gender-based violence (GBV) remain significant challenges affecting adolescent girls in Malawi, undermining their rights and putting more families at risk of separation.

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES
It is critical to continue to strengthen community protection structures in Malawi, and there is tremendous opportunity to build local capacity through partnerships with traditional leaders. Some local chiefs have already championed child protection efforts by engaging with parents and local leaders to enforce community by-laws, annul child marriages, and promote girls’ return to school. These approaches demonstrate the powerful role of traditional authorities in transforming their communities, and this is why ACE Malawi ensures that it works closely with traditional leaders to strengthen community accountability, promote child rights, and mobilize collective action to protect vulnerable children and families.

THE ACE MODEL: EMPOWERMENT FROM WITHIN
In Malawi, we believe that connecting youth with their internal identity in Christ, providing peer support and a pathway to healing, and instilling practical skills and a growth mindset, will stabilize young adults, lead to healthier and more stable families, and break the cycle of inter-generational trauma and poverty.
As a Christian organization, ACE recognizes that the church serves as a unique and influential body to mobilize community support for vulnerable children and families. Since 2020, ACE has partnered with churches, faith-based institutions, and communities to build awareness of family-based care and child protection, and generate localized support for vulnerable children and families.
GRASSROOT SOCCER
Grassroot Soccer is an adolescent health organization that leverages the power of soccer to equip young people with the life-saving information, services, and mentorship they need to live healthier lives.
