Annie Kamana, Head - Terry Wood School

Annie was born on 29th July in the year 1950 at a village called Mapanza in the Southern Province of Zambia.  She was born after two sets of twins and they gave her the name Nsazya meaning “she who follows twins.” The first set of twins Annie’s mother had were still born boys and then she had another set of twins – girls this time – who survived and are still living today.   Then along came Annie who was followed by another girl and then a still born boy. Two more girls followed and then Annie’s mother had another set of twin girls.  The boy who followed this third set of twins was still born and so was the next one after that.  However the girls who followed next survived.  This strange phenomenon in the family –   all boys being still born and only girls surviving – has defied any scientific or supernatural explanation.  Of this impressively large family today, nine are alive and they are all women.

Annie’s deepest passion growing up was to be either a school teacher or a nurse and she was constantly torn between the two.  However, her mother’s cousin, who was a teacher, took Annie into his home for a while. In him she saw everything that she desired to be. It was this uncle who groomed Annie for a teaching profession.

Annie’s teaching career, which spans almost four decades, has seen her rise from a mere teacher to a Senior Teacher and eventually Head Teacher.  She was Head Teacher in various schools for over thirteen years before retiring.  Currently, she heads the Terry Wood School at House of Martha.  Annie, who lost her husband this year on 3rd April, was blessed with seven children, one of whom has departed this life. She now remains with four sons and two daughters. Annie lives in Libala, a suburb of Lusaka with her aged mother who is still very active and completely ambulatory. Her youngest daughter is studying at the Copperbelt University of Zambia.

Annie is a member of the Anglican Church where she is very actively involved in various church organizations and she chairs a couple of them.  Her most recent appointment was as District Secretary of the Christian Council of Churches.  Annie is a ‘born leader’ whose skills have been very evident throughout her life resulting in her being elected to leadership positions since the time she was in school.  She believes in discipline and hard work and is very passionate about her work.  Annie has a big heart for children and that makes her work at Terry Wood School a source of great joy to her.
