Until last week new arrivals were welcomed into the infant nursery. The nurses took great care to keep them as separated as possible from the other babies until we could confirm that the new infants were free of communicable disease. Most of the time the system worked, but last summer a baby came to us who had not yet broken out in rash but was carrying measles. Thankfully, all of the babies survived, but fourteen babies contracted the potentially fatal disease before the nurses were able to get it under control. We realized we could no longer get by without an isolation room where newcomers could be observed for several days before coming in contact with the other little ones. As we do with all our needs, we began to pray. God answered.
This cozy, welcoming room was made possible by Hilfe Weltweit (Help Worldwide), a nonprofit Christian ministry in Germany. A local artist painted cartoons and African animals onto the crisp white walls. The day after the room was finished two newborn baby boys who had been abandoned at the hospital were brought to House of Moses. It was with great rejoicing that these two precious little boys were safely taken into this refuge for a bath, warm milk, and prayerful coddling.
