When I was in Zambia in February an 11 year old boy was brought by the police late at night to House of Martha. He was so weak from not eating that he couldn’t even walk and refused to eat anything except to drink a small cup of ORS, a drink used to treat dehydration. That first night he had several epileptic seizures. The next morning the workers gathered and sang and prayed for him. A few minutes later, he got up ate a banana and asked for a ball!
He spoke only Tonga, a tribal language from western Zambia, so we knew he was not from Lusaka. The next day Isabel, one of our social workers, took him to the TV station to be shown, hoping family members would see the broadcast and recognize him. Minutes after the broadcast she received a call from the family. They had thought the boy had died, but he had only become lost in the large, unfamiliar capitol city. If it had not been for House of Martha it is doubtful this little boy would have lived.
